A clean colon means a clear, accurate exam — and a good prep is the single most important thing you can do before your procedure. This guide walks you through exactly what to eat (and what to avoid) starting 5 days out, all the way through the day after.
Important: This is a general guide. Always follow the exact written prep instructions from your doctor — they may differ slightly based on the type of prep you were prescribed (GoLYTELY, MoviPrep, SUPREP, MiraLAX/Gatorade, etc.) or any medical condition you have.
High-fiber foods take longer to clear out. Switching to a low-fiber (low-residue) diet now makes the actual prep much easier and more effective.
| Category | You CAN eat / drink | AVOID |
|---|---|---|
| Grains | White bread, white rice, plain pasta, refined cereals (Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes) | Whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, bran cereal, quinoa, granola, seeded breads |
| Fruits | Peeled apples, ripe bananas, melon (no seeds), canned peaches or pears (no skin) | Berries, grapes, raisins, dried fruit, fruit with skin, seeds, or pulp |
| Vegetables | Well-cooked, peeled vegetables: potatoes (no skin), carrots, green beans, zucchini | Raw vegetables, salads, corn, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, leafy greens, beans, lentils |
| Protein | Chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, tender lean beef | Tough or fatty meat, sausage with seeds, nuts, seeds, popcorn |
| Dairy | Milk, plain yogurt (no fruit chunks or seeds), mild cheese | Yogurt with granola, nuts, or seeds |
Stay on the low-fiber diet and start eating smaller meals. Drink plenty of water all day — staying hydrated makes the next day much more comfortable.
| Category | You CAN eat / drink | AVOID |
|---|---|---|

No solid food today. A clear liquid is anything you can see through. If you can't read newsprint through it, it doesn't count.

|---|---|---|
| Allowed (clear liquids only — all day) | Water • clear broth (chicken, beef, vegetable) • apple or white grape juice • lemonade without pulp • plain coffee or tea (no milk or creamer) • sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade — yellow, orange, or clear) • clear sodas (Sprite, ginger ale) • Jell-O (yellow, orange, or green) • popsicles (no fruit pieces, no red/purple/blue) | Anything red, purple, or blue • milk, cream, or non-dairy milk • orange juice with pulp • smoothies • alcohol • all solid food |
Your prep is usually split into two doses — one in the evening the day before, and one early in the morning the day of. Mix and chill the solution ahead of time (cold tastes better), drink each glass over 10–15 minutes, and stay near a bathroom. Sucking on a hard candy or lemon between glasses can help with the taste.
You're ready when what comes out is clear or pale yellow with no solid pieces.
Finish your second dose of prep on the schedule we gave you (usually 4–6 hours before arrival). After your cutoff time, nothing by mouth — no water, gum, mints, or candy. Bring your ID, insurance card, and a driver. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after sedation.
