Colonoscopy Prep Guide: Day-by-Day Food List

A clean colon means a clear, accurate exam — and a good prep is the single most important thing you can do before your procedure. This guide walks you through exactly what to eat (and what to avoid) starting 5 days out, all the way through the day after.

Important: This is a general guide. Always follow the exact written prep instructions from your doctor — they may differ slightly based on the type of prep you were prescribed (GoLYTELY, MoviPrep, SUPREP, MiraLAX/Gatorade, etc.) or any medical condition you have.

5 to 3 days before: low-fiber diet

High-fiber foods take longer to clear out. Switching to a low-fiber (low-residue) diet now makes the actual prep much easier and more effective.

Starting your bowel prep

Your prep is usually split into two doses — one in the evening the day before, and one early in the morning the day of. Mix and chill the solution ahead of time (cold tastes better), drink each glass over 10–15 minutes, and stay near a bathroom. Sucking on a hard candy or lemon between glasses can help with the taste.

You're ready when what comes out is clear or pale yellow with no solid pieces.

Day of the procedure

Finish your second dose of prep on the schedule we gave you (usually 4–6 hours before arrival). After your cutoff time, nothing by mouth — no water, gum, mints, or candy. Bring your ID, insurance card, and a driver. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after sedation.

Frequently asked questions

What can you not eat 5 days before a colonoscopy?
Starting 5 days before your colonoscopy, avoid high-fiber foods: nuts, seeds, popcorn, raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, brown rice, beans, lentils, corn, and any food with skins or hulls. Stick to a low-fiber diet of white bread, white rice, plain pasta, well-cooked peeled vegetables, tender meats, eggs, and dairy without nuts or fruit chunks.
What can I eat the day before a colonoscopy?
The day before your colonoscopy you can only have clear liquids — no solid food. That means water, clear broth, apple or white grape juice, plain coffee or tea (no milk), Jell-O and popsicles in yellow, orange, or green, and sports drinks. Avoid anything red, purple, or blue, and anything with milk or pulp.
What to eat 2 days before colonoscopy?
Two days before, continue a low-fiber diet and start cutting back portion sizes. White bread, white rice, eggs, chicken, fish, well-cooked peeled vegetables, and clear juices are all fine. Avoid raw produce, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and red or purple drinks.
Why can't I have red, purple, or blue liquids?
Red, purple, and blue dyes can stain the lining of the colon and look like blood during the procedure. This makes it harder for your doctor to see clearly and can lead to a false alarm or a repeat colonoscopy.
What can I eat after a colonoscopy?
Start with light, easy-to-digest foods: water, clear broth, crackers, toast, plain rice, applesauce, and bananas. Most patients can return to a normal diet the next day. If a polyp was removed, your doctor may ask you to avoid nuts, seeds, popcorn, and alcohol for a few days.
Can I drink coffee before a colonoscopy?
Yes — black coffee or tea (no milk, no non-dairy creamer) is allowed during the clear liquid day. Stop all liquids by the cutoff time your doctor gives you, usually 2–4 hours before the procedure.
